A van drove into a crowd at Berlin’s annual Pride celebration on Saturday in Tiergarten Park, near the route of a Pride march. The vehicle struck multiple people before crashing into a tree. One person was killed and at least 16 others were injured in the incident.
A 21-year-old suspect identified only as Abdul B. fled the scene. German police and prosecutors issued a wanted notice for the fugitive on Sunday, warning members of the public to avoid direct contact with him as he may be armed and dangerous. According to reporting, authorities identified the suspect as a member of the city’s “Islamist scene,” though sources differ slightly on injury counts, with reports ranging from 14 to 16 wounded.
The incident prompted the cancellation of the Pride march that was scheduled to take place in the area. The investigation into the incident was ongoing as authorities sought to apprehend the suspect.
