A former governor in Kenya has been convicted of murdering a pregnant student with whom he had an affair. Okoth Obado was found guilty in the death of Sharon Otieno, concluding a high-profile criminal case in the East African nation.
Separately, the British military has cancelled planned training exercises in Kenya scheduled for September, citing a dispute over bilateral defence agreements. According to reports, the Kenyan government declined to ratify the defence agreement that the UK sought to renew, with Kenyan lawmakers requesting modifications to grant local authorities greater prosecutorial powers over criminal offences involving British soldiers.
The cancellation stems from disagreements over jurisdiction and funding arrangements between the two governments’ defence authorities. The UK had aimed to maintain the existing arrangement, while Kenya sought revisions to its terms before proceeding with the agreement’s renewal.
