Amazon has announced plans to deploy a constellation of more than 5,000 satellites as part of a new telecommunications network called Amazon Leo. The system is designed to connect devices directly from space, representing the company’s expansion into satellite-based internet services.
To support this initiative, Amazon announced plans to acquire Globalstar, a satellite communications company, for approximately $11.6 billion in April. The proposed network will partly rely on assets and infrastructure from Globalstar as part of the deployment strategy.
The company is currently seeking federal approval for the satellite constellation project, which would require regulatory clearance before the network can be launched and operated.
