McConnell Not Cleared to Return to Senate Following June Fall

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) released a health update stating he is not yet cleared to return to in-person work as he continues recovering from a fall at his Washington home on June 14. McConnell was hospitalized following the incident but has since been discharged and is recovering in a rehabilitation center.

McConnell’s office shared a written statement from the senator apologizing for his inability to attend the Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky, an annual political event he has attended for over 40 years. A physician’s assessment included in the statement indicated he is not yet cleared for Senate duties.

While medical clearance remains pending, some colleagues have offered positive accounts of McConnell’s condition. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) stated that a recent visitor to McConnell at the rehabilitation facility described him as “clear-minded” and recovering well. However, the official medical assessment continues to restrict his return to in-person Senate activities.
