Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps fired ballistic missiles at U.S. forces stationed in Jordan on Tuesday evening, marking a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and the United States. The attack came amid an existing pause in broader hostilities in the region. In response, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia launched strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq within hours of the Iranian attack, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
The renewed military confrontation follows the end of what the Pentagon termed “Operation Epic Fury,” with the department establishing a new casualty category for service members affected by the resumed fighting with Iran. Initial reports indicate four U.S. service members were killed and dozens injured in the recent exchanges of fire.
The escalation has had immediate economic consequences, with oil prices rising sharply as markets respond to increased U.S.-Iran tensions. International benchmark Brent crude climbed to approximately $91 per barrel by Wednesday afternoon, up from lows near $83 earlier in the week, though still below pre-ceasefire levels that had reached as high as $101 per barrel.
