Nearly 22 years after Scott Peterson’s conviction in the death of his pregnant wife Laci Peterson, a retired LAPD detective has stated that Peterson deserves a new trial, arguing that critical witnesses were overlooked during the original police investigation. Peterson’s legal team is pushing forward with claims of “new evidence” that they say could help overturn his conviction.
According to reporting on the petition, the retired detective’s allegations center on the handling of witness testimony during the initial investigation. Peterson’s legal representatives have cited this oversight as grounds for a new trial following a previously denied petition for reconsideration.
The case has drawn continued attention, though not all family members agree with efforts to reopen it. Laci Peterson’s mother, Sharon Rocha, has dismissed the claims of new evidence being presented by the defense team, indicating disagreement within the case’s circle over whether a new trial is warranted.
