Andy Burnham has assumed the role of UK Prime Minister and Labour leader, outlining a policy agenda that signals a departure from Conservative governance. In his inaugural speech, Burnham pledged to pursue public ownership of utilities, housing, and transport, and rejected policies associated with Margaret Thatcher’s tenure. He also committed to addressing the cost of living through measures including potential energy bill reductions.
Among his proposed policies, Burnham is examining plans to reduce household energy bills by approximately £130 annually and make heat pumps cheaper to operate than gas boilers. These measures are part of a broader effort to reduce the price of essential services for British households.
However, Burnham’s plan to abolish the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has drawn criticism from multiple quarters. MPs, Whitehall officials, and technology experts have expressed concerns that scrapping the department would waste valuable time during a critical period for artificial intelligence development and economic growth.
