How did Opetaia end up fighting Mikaelian instead of David Benavidez?
Opetaia had been pushing for a unification bout with David Benavidez, who holds the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles, but the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement. Opetaia used the announcement to needle Benavidez directly, saying “Credit to Noel for stepping up to the plate while others – yes, David Benavidez, I’m talking about you – continue to run and hide.” Benavidez, for his part, has repeatedly said he isn’t interested in pursuing the Zuffa belt or aligning with the promotion, and he’s since moved up to light heavyweight, where he beat Zurdo Ramirez to claim the WBA and WBC titles at that weight. Notably, Mikaelian and Benavidez had reportedly been ordered into a unification fight earlier this year and were in active talks before those negotiations were abandoned in favor of this new matchup.
