Paris St-Germain open their 2026-27 campaign against Aston Villa in the Uefa Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday at 20:00 BST, the first step in a season where they could become just the second club ever to win three straight Champions League titles. PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final in Munich, then defeated Arsenal on penalties in Budapest this year to secure back-to-back European crowns. Villa reached the game as Europa League winners.
The three-peat bid
Only Real Madrid has previously won three consecutive Champions Leagues, doing so from 2016 to 2018. No other side in the competition’s history — not Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, not Manchester City, not Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, nor any Bayern Munich team — has managed it. Looking back to the old European Cup era, Real Madrid won the first five editions from 1956-1960, and Ajax and Bayern Munich each won three straight in the 1970s. Widening the window to three European Cups within five years adds only Liverpool, who won in 1977, 1978 and 1981. Luis Enrique’s PSG are aiming to join that short list this season.
Six-trophy target
PSG are entered in six competitions this season, three of which are one-off finals: the Uefa Super Cup, the Trophee des Champions (France’s equivalent of the Community Shield), the Champions League, Ligue 1, the French Cup and the Fifa Intercontinental Cup. No major club has ever swept all six in a single season. Last season PSG won a joint-record five trophies, missing out only in the French Cup, where they lost to Paris FC in January. The season before that, they won four. Outside PSG, the closest comparable haul belongs to Celtic, who won five trophies in 1966-67 including the Glasgow Cup, while Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City have each managed four in a season.
World Cup fatigue and availability
PSG had 16 players involved at the World Cup, with six of them — five for France plus Fabian Ruiz for champions Spain — playing into the final weekend. Eight different PSG players scored at least one goal at the tournament, a record for a single club. There were only 24 days between the World Cup final and the Super Cup opener, meaning several PSG players will have had little rest heading into the new season.
Recent slow starts
PSG have shown a similar pattern before. Last season there was roughly a month between the Club World Cup final — a loss to Chelsea that closed out 2025-26 — and the Super Cup, in which PSG came back from 2-0 down to beat Tottenham on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The club has also tended to start Champions League campaigns slowly in recent seasons, according to BBC Sport.
