How low have the reservoirs fallen?
Lake Powell’s water level has dropped more than 20 feet since the start of this year alone, according to AZFamily. The reservoir is now within about 30 feet of the threshold at which its turbines would no longer be able to generate hydroelectric power — a possibility federal officials had already flagged as a risk earlier this year. Lake Mead, which sits downstream on the Colorado River from Lake Powell, hit its own record low roughly a week before Powell’s latest drop.
What is causing the decline?
Officials point to a combination of factors: a drought stretching back roughly three decades, long-term overuse of the river’s water, and the broader effects of climate change. Sarah Porter, director of Arizona State University’s Kyl Center for Water Policy, said the drop was not a surprise, calling it further proof that the Colorado River system — a key water source for Arizona and neighboring states — is “in trouble.”
Will people run out of water or lose power?
Experts quoted by AZFamily say the region is not at risk of running out of water outright, and that cities and towns have been preparing for this kind of decline for years. Porter said the falling reservoir levels will affect tap water in some ways but won’t leave residents without water coming out of the tap.
