The transfer
Rodri, the 30-year-old Spain midfielder and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, has completed his transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona. The Spanish midfielder signed a four-year contract running through June 30, 2030. Manchester City and Barcelona agreed on a transfer fee of approximately £65 million, structured as €60 million base with €15 million in add-ons, of which €11 million are virtually guaranteed according to The Guardian. Rodri will earn around €15 million per year, an increase from his Manchester City salary.
Barcelona’s third formal bid for the player was accepted. According to BBC Sport, Real Madrid had initially appeared the most likely destination and Rodri had previously indicated openness to joining the club, but Madrid ended their interest before Barcelona moved decisively. Sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona had obtained Rodri’s approval to open negotiations with City, and after City rejected an initial offer of £38.5 million, an agreement was reached at substantially higher terms.
His record and World Cup performance
Rodri departs Manchester City after seven seasons, having made 298 appearances for the club. During his time with City, he won 12 major honours: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups, and the Champions League in 2023. At the 2024 World Cup, he was named player of the tournament as Spain won the trophy for the second time. He was subsequently awarded the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
The midfielder returns to Spanish football for the first time since leaving Atletico Madrid to join City in 2019. According to BBC Sport, his final two seasons at City were disrupted by an ACL rupture in 2024 and subsequent muscular injuries, though he returned to peak form during the World Cup.
Barcelona’s ambitions and tactical fit
Barcelona, managed by German coach Hansi Flick, aims to end a drought in the Champions League that stretches back to 2015. The club has won La Liga in back-to-back seasons but have not progressed far enough in European competition despite possessing attacking talent including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal. Barcelona’s summer signings have also included Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, with reported interest in Julian Alvarez.
According to CBS Sports, Flick’s tactical system relies on a high defensive line, which has been vulnerable to counter-attacks in recent seasons. Rodri’s defensive positioning, ball-winning ability, and passing are expected to address this weakness by breaking up attacks and converting them into offensive chances. His tactical intelligence and composure on the ball, as described by Barcelona’s official club statement to The Guardian, will support midfield partners including Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, and Frenkie de Jong.
CBS Sports noted concerns about Rodri’s injury history and age, but suggested Barcelona could manage his workload through rotation, similar to Paris Saint-Germain’s approach, allowing the squad to remain fresh across league and European competition.
Rodri’s perspective and City’s transition
Rodri told Spanish radio that he is ready to “feel that excitement again” and described Barcelona as a “dream” to play for. He praised manager Hansi Flick’s style as “somewhat different” from his experience at City and said he expected it to help him grow as a player. In his farewell to Manchester City supporters, Rodri described his seven years at the club as “very special and unforgettable,” noting that the city shaped his entire life.
According to BBC Sport, Rodri was in the final 12 months of his City contract signed in 2022. Although Manchester City wanted to extend his deal, negotiations did not result in an agreement. The club has prepared for his departure by signing midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to CBS Sports.
