Peru’s Andes region has been struck by multiple incidents resulting in significant casualties. A 5.5 to 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Saturday evening, according to reports from the US Geological Survey and international news outlets. The earthquake caused buildings to collapse, particularly near Sicaya and Pumpunya, leaving at least six people dead and more than 30 injured, with approximately 300 people displaced from their homes.
In a separate incident, a minibus traveling on a mountain road in the Peruvian Andes lost control on a curve and rolled off the roadway, resulting in at least 14 deaths and five injuries. The timing and location of this accident in relation to the earthquake remain unclear from the available reports.
Emergency response efforts are underway in affected areas, with rescue workers searching through collapsed structures for missing persons. The combined impact of these incidents has created a significant humanitarian situation in the region.
