Bouaddi was stood down from Lille’s Ligue 1 match against Angers on Sunday ahead of a medical with City, with the transfer expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Who is Bouaddi and what he brings

Bouaddi is an 18-year-old midfielder who operates primarily as a number 6 (defensive midfielder). He represented Morocco at this summer’s World Cup, where he started five of the nation’s six matches as they reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to France. It was only his eighth international cap. According to BBC Sport, former France international Olivier Giroud, who played alongside Kylian Mbappe at 18, said he has the same feeling about Bouaddi’s maturity. Hassan Kachloul, a former Morocco international, told BBC Sport that Bouaddi “showed not just quality but personality – a kind of positive arrogance” against midfielders like Casemiro, Lucas Paqueta and Bruno Guimaraes.

His record at Lille

Bouaddi made his Lille debut in a Conference League group game in October 2023 at age 16 years and three days, making him the youngest footballer to ever play in that competition and the youngest to play for Lille at senior level. He was serenaded by Lille fans after helping the club defeat Real Madrid in the Champions League on his 17th birthday in 2024. He has made 88 appearances for Lille since that debut and broke a record held by Eden Hazard by reaching 50 Ligue 1 appearances at just 18 years old. Lille finished third in Ligue 1 last season.

Manchester City’s summer spending and squad context

The Bouaddi signing takes Manchester City’s summer spending to nearly £200m. Earlier in the window, City signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m. Anderson can play as a number 6 or number 8 (box-to-box), which means Bouaddi may not go directly into Enzo Maresca’s starting XI despite his pedigree. City have also sold midfielders Rodri to Barcelona for £65m and Tijjani Reinders to Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah for £52m, so central midfield has been a priority area for strengthening. The club remains interested in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, though Chelsea want £120m for the Argentine midfielder and City value him less.
