The injury and what happened
Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty suffered a right leg injury during Sunday practice. According to multiple reports, the second-year back went down after landing awkwardly while diving to catch a pass thrown by quarterback Kirk Cousins during 11-on-11 drills. He was unable to put any weight on his right leg as trainers helped him off the field. He did not return to practice. The entire team got down on a knee and remained silent for a moment after Jeanty went down.
Jeanty’s 2025 season and role
Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 draft, had a strong rookie campaign. In 17 games, he totaled 1,321 yards from scrimmage—975 rushing yards and 346 receiving yards on 55 catches—with 10 total touchdowns. He was expected to be a focal point of the Raiders’ offense in 2026 under new head coach Klint Kubiak following the team’s overhaul on offense.
Diagnosis and official status
The Raiders did not immediately provide information on the severity of Jeanty’s injury or a diagnosis following practice.
Running back depth chart without Jeanty
The injury raises significant concern about the Raiders’ running back depth. According to Sporting News, the team’s options behind Jeanty are limited. Mike Washington Jr., a fourth-round rookie out of Arkansas, is presumed to begin handling first-team reps if Jeanty is sidelined. In his first NFL preseason action against Arizona, Washington ran six times for 63 yards, including a 53-yard run, and showed capability in pass protection and as a receiver. He followed that with nine carries for 56 yards and two catches for 18 yards against Houston.
Beyond Washington, the Raiders’ remaining running back options include Dare Ogunbowale, who has 594 career rushing yards and 850 receiving yards in his NFL career; Dylan Laube, a 200-pound special teams contributor with only 9 career rushing yards; and Roman Hemby, an undrafted free agent who played at Indiana with quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Raiders’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft.
