A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Another service member was injured and receiving medical treatment for a minor injury from the same incident.
Separately, the U.S. military announced it recovered unidentified human remains while conducting search operations in Jordan for an American service member reported missing following an Iranian missile and drone attack in that country. The circumstances and timeline connecting these incidents remain under investigation.
The deaths and recovery operations follow a recent Iranian military attack on a U.S. base in the region. President Trump characterized the deaths as “a very sad thing,” noting that service members in the region are working to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, according to reports.
