The personnel change
Jim Gaiero, the lead producer of ESPN’s “College GameDay” for the past decade, has been removed from the show ahead of the 2026 college football season, according to Awful Announcing’s reporting on Wednesday. Matthew Garrett, a vice president of production at ESPN, will take over as the show’s lead producer. ESPN officials informed people involved with “GameDay” of the change earlier this month.
ESPN’s stated reason
ESPN has attributed Gaiero’s move to a new assignment preparing for the network’s Super Bowl broadcast scheduled for February 2027. The network says Gaiero will assume a “significant role” in production preparation for that major event.
Reported friction with Pat McAfee
According to Awful Announcing, sources involved with “GameDay” suggested that Pat McAfee may have factored into the decision, at least in part. The timing of the move — just days before the college football season begins — added to speculation about McAfee’s involvement. Multiple sources told Awful Announcing that McAfee’s October 2025 remarks on social media were targeted at both Gaiero and Garrett. In those comments, McAfee said that “old white people and old ESPN people” were “the people that hate me most,” and added that “that’s who all the producers are of GameDay too.” One source directly stated: “He was absolutely talking about Jim and Matthew Garrett. That isn’t up for debate.”

Gaiero has worked at ESPN for over 30 years. Beyond his decade leading “College GameDay,” he has produced coverage of college basketball, college football, NASCAR, the NBA Draft, and the PGA Championship.
