Severe wildfires are burning across multiple regions in Europe and North Africa, driven by extreme heat conditions. In France, major fires have spread across tens of thousands of hectares, with authorities reporting significant displacement of populations. In North Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco are experiencing major wildfires fueled by the ongoing heatwave.
The scale of evacuations varies across reports, with sources citing different figures. Al Jazeera reports more than 360,000 people evacuated as wildfires rage in France and Spain, while Fox News indicates more than 250,000 displaced in France alone. France 24 reports 42,000 hectares burned in France with 220,000 people evacuated. One of the largest forest fires France has seen since World War II is actively burning, with approximately 2,500 firefighters and 1,500 soldiers engaged in containment efforts.
The fires are advancing unpredictably, threatening populated areas including the Bordeaux region, a major wine-producing area. Civilian farmers have joined firefighting efforts by providing water tankers to support firefighting operations. Authorities in France and Spain are struggling to contain the blazes, which officials have attributed to successive heatwaves in the region.
