Major wildfires are affecting multiple European countries, with France experiencing particularly severe conditions. In southwestern France’s Gironde region, a wildfire has burned over 40,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people, including residents and tourists. By Monday, July 27, France’s interior minister reported the fire had stopped growing, though he cautioned it remained uncontained. A separate blaze near Bordeaux burned more than 162 square miles (420 square kilometers) in less than four days, while the Madrid region of Spain is facing its worst fires on record.
The wildfires have created unprecedented atmospheric phenomena and public health challenges. French firefighters have encountered pyrocumulonimbus clouds—also called “fire clouds”—for the first time, a phenomenon scientists say demonstrates the effects of human-related climate change. In Scotland, the Cairngorms national park has been extensively damaged after 12 days of what officials describe as “cataclysmic” wildfires, with recovery expected to take decades. Smoke from the French wildfires has blanketed Bordeaux, affecting air quality and residents’ health.
Heat is intensifying the crisis across the region. Spain’s authorities reported having two critical days to contain wildfires before worsening weather conditions, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urging citizens to exercise caution ahead of a new heatwave. In the United Kingdom, authorities are preparing for a fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach 35 degrees Celsius, prompting fire chiefs to issue public appeals for precautions in dry rural areas. Rebuilding efforts are expected to be costly, with French government estimates ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 euros per hectare for reforestation and reconstruction.
