Nelson Haase Mazzei, a retired colonel, has been captured by authorities in Chile more than 50 years after the death of folk singer Víctor Jara. Haase Mazzei was convicted in 2023, along with six other retired soldiers, in connection with Jara’s kidnapping and murder during Chile’s 1973 military coup.
Haase Mazzei had fled from authorities following his 2023 conviction and remained a fugitive until his recent capture. According to reports, he was the last person wanted in connection with Jara’s death to be apprehended and brought to justice.
