President Trump has called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep the Senate in session until it passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act or eliminates the filibuster. Trump made the demand public on Monday as he seeks to prioritize the election reform bill in the legislative agenda.
Conservative Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), have echoed Trump’s position by calling for the cancellation of the August recess to allow for debate on the SAVE America Act. These senators argue that forgoing the scheduled break is necessary to advance what they view as a critical legislative priority.
Some GOP senators have criticized Majority Leader Thune’s approach to the matter. Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) suggested that Thune is being overly cautious, signaling internal disagreement within the Republican caucus over the appropriate strategy for advancing the Trump administration’s agenda during the legislative session.
