Nearly a year after President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill into law, a new Politico poll found that public understanding of the legislation remains limited. According to the survey, 49 percent of Americans either have not heard of the bill or have heard of it but cannot explain what it does.
The legislation was intended to increase take-home pay by eliminating federal taxes on tips, overtime pay, and other types of income. While the Internal Revenue Service has ceased federal tax collection on these categories, implementation has been uneven across states.
According to reporting from the New York Post, dozens of Democrat-led states have continued to collect state-level taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits despite the federal changes. This means that while some Americans have seen increases in their paychecks as intended by the federal law, those in states maintaining their own tax policies have not received the full benefit promised by the legislation.
