Oman has presented Iran with a proposal to jointly manage the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically critical waterway through which much of the world’s oil passes. The plan is backed by other Gulf states and includes a system of voluntary fees for ships using the strait, modeled after the management approach used in the Strait of Malacca.
According to sources cited by international media outlets, the proposal aims to restore stable shipping through the strait following months of disruption. Multiple sources indicate the plan represents an effort by regional actors to establish a framework for de-escalating tensions and normalizing commercial traffic through the waterway.
The initiative comes after recent escalations involving attacks on commercial shipping in the region, which have been attributed to the broader US-Israeli military engagement in the Middle East and related regional tensions.
