What happened
South African swimmer Chad le Clos says his apartment in Sea Point, Cape Town, was destroyed by a fire on the night of 30 July, hours after he had set the record for most medals won in Commonwealth Games history at the 2026 Glasgow Games. Le Clos, 34, said the blaze started in his apartment block and spread to his home of more than a decade, leaving nothing to salvage. He announced the news on Instagram after taking time to process what he called a heartbreaking tragedy.
According to reports cited by BBC Sport, a 93-year-old resident of the building died in the fire. Le Clos confirmed a longtime neighbour of his was killed, and he offered condolences to the victim’s family in his post. Le Clos overtook Australia’s Emma McKeon as the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history when South Africa won bronze in the men’s 4x100m medley relay in Glasgow, taking his 21st Commonwealth medal. It was his third medal of the 2026 Games, after silver in the mixed 4x100m medley relay and bronze in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Le Clos, born in Durban, is best known for beating Michael Phelps to win gold in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics, ending a run in which Phelps had not lost that event since 2001.
