Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a US Senate hearing on Wednesday regarding the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fauci repeatedly declined to answer questions from lawmakers, particularly from Republican Senator Rand Paul, who has led a longstanding investigation into how the pandemic began.
According to Fauci’s statements at the hearing, he feared that Republican senators could attempt to use his testimony to prosecute him for perjury. He also accused Senate committee chair Rand Paul of having an “obvious obsession” with him. Democratic ranking member Gary Peters noted the committee’s history of bipartisan inquiry and oversight.
The hearing represented a significant moment in ongoing Republican efforts to investigate the pandemic’s origins, with Fauci’s refusal to testify marking a departure from his previous public appearances on the subject. Fauci served as a key medical adviser to both the Trump and Biden administrations during the Covid-19 crisis.
