Arizona is grappling with the impacts of extreme heat across multiple sectors, including agriculture and residential areas. According to the Arizona Farm Bureau, the state is home to approximately 200,000 milking cows, and the intense heat poses significant challenges to livestock operations that are considered part of Arizona’s economic foundation.
The heat has affected both commercial and individual residents. In one incident, firefighters in Eloy responded to a trailer breakdown at a truck stop on Interstate 10, where they used water to help cool approximately 80 cattle after the vehicle became disabled in high temperatures. The event highlighted the risks that livestock face during transport in extreme conditions.
Residents have also struggled with cooling infrastructure failures. A Mesa woman spent three years trying to afford air conditioning repairs, with quotes reaching $18,000, until she found assistance through a Valley organization that provides free AC unit replacements. This resource has helped residents who might otherwise lack access to essential cooling during dangerous heat periods.
