British MP Claims French Navy Fired Shots During Channel Interview

A British opposition lawmaker accused a French naval patrol vessel of firing “warning shots” near him while he was being interviewed aboard a fishing boat in the English Channel on Tuesday. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that the vessel fired 17 shots during his BBC interview, which he characterized as a safety concern.

French authorities disputed the characterization of the incident. According to French officials, the gunfire was part of a routine training exercise conducted under international safety rules. The differing accounts represent a disagreement over both the intent and context of the naval activity, with the British MP viewing it as a direct threat to his safety during media engagement, while French authorities maintain it was a scheduled military drill.
