The kick
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker connected on a 69-yard field goal on the final play of the first half Saturday night in a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The kick cleared the crossbar by several yards and gave the Chiefs a 9-0 lead at halftime, along with earlier field goals from Butker of 45 and 58 yards.
Why it’s not the official record
While Butker’s 69-yarder is technically the second-longest field goal ever made in any NFL game—including preseason—it does not count as an official NFL record. Preseason games do not factor into the NFL’s official record books.
The official NFL regular-season record belongs to Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little, who made a 68-yard field goal on November 2, 2025, against the Raiders in Week 9 of the 2025 season. Little also holds the longest field goal ever made in an NFL context: a 70-yarder in the 2025 preseason, which also does not count officially. Little additionally made a 67-yard field goal during the 2025 regular season, giving him the two longest official regular-season kicks in history.
Had Butker’s kick been made during the regular season, it would have set a new official record at 69 yards, surpassing Little’s 68-yard mark.
Preseason record context
Butker’s 69-yard field goal ranks second on the list of longest preseason field goals ever made. He surpassed Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey’s previous preseason record of 66 yards, set in 2024.
About Butker
Butker is 31 years old and has been with the Chiefs since 2017, when he was signed off the Carolina Panthers practice squad. He has been a core contributor throughout the team’s decade-long run of success. Butker currently ranks fourth all-time in NFL field-goal percentage.
