Nelson Haase Mazzei, a retired colonel, has been captured in Chile after fleeing authorities in 2023. Haase Mazzei was convicted along with six other retired soldiers in connection with the kidnapping and murder of folk singer Victor Jara, which occurred in the aftermath of Chile’s military coup in 1973.
Jara’s death took place over 50 years ago, making this capture a significant moment in accountability for crimes committed during the Pinochet era. Haase Mazzei had evaded arrest following his conviction before being tracked down and brought into custody.
