Senate Democrats have voiced criticism of the Trump administration on several policy matters in recent interviews. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia announced he will vote against Jay Clayton’s nomination as director of national intelligence, citing disappointment with Clayton’s testimony at a recent confirmation hearing despite previously expressing optimism about the nominee.
Warner has also been vocal about the administration’s approach to election security. He criticized a primetime speech delivered by President Trump on the subject, calling it a demonstration that the administration is “not serious about securing elections” and pointing to recent firings of Democratic members from the Elections Assistance Commission. Warner separately criticized CBS News for covering the speech, though journalists at the network reportedly disagreed with his characterization of their coverage.
On foreign policy, Warner commented on the U.S. military conflict with Iran, expressing condolences to families of two service members killed in recent fighting while noting it is “remarkable in many ways” that casualties have not been higher. Meanwhile, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania expressed frustration with Trump’s focus on the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the president should instead focus on current positive accomplishments.
