The U.S. Department of Justice reversed a 2022 ban on TikTok downloads for federal employees, citing changes in the app’s ownership structure. According to the DOJ, ByteDance transferred TikTok’s U.S. operations and user data to a majority American-owned joint venture, which the department determined resolved the security concerns that prompted the original prohibition.
The federal ban on TikTok for government devices had been in place since 2022 as part of broader efforts to restrict access to applications controlled by foreign entities.
