Europe is currently dealing with significant wildfire activity, with emergency crews across the continent working to contain multiple blazes. In central Spain, firefighting crews have deployed more than 25 planes to battle a wildfire north of Madrid that has been burning for three days, reflecting the scale of firefighting efforts underway.
Experts point to multiple contributing factors in this summer’s wildfires. Record heat has fueled the destruction, but authorities and analysts also cite human error, suspected arson, and land management practices as playing important roles in the fires’ severity and spread. The combination of these factors has resulted in devastating consequences across the region.
