A summer of extreme heat, drought and wildfires is hitting Europe’s food supply chains and, in some countries, its electricity grid at the same time. In the UK, more than half of England has been declared to be in drought conditions by the Environment Agency, and this year’s harvest is the earliest in 50 years. The British Retail Consortium is warning that disruption to the supply chain, from grain fields to bakery to supermarket shelf, could eventually push up shop prices, while the National Farmers’ Union has raised the possibility of shortages of some food products if the dry conditions persist.
