The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a contract extension with running back Bijan Robinson on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. The deal runs through the 2030 season and is worth up to $75 million with incentives, with a base value of $66.75 million. That works out to an average of $22.25 million per year, topping the previous high mark set by Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley, whose average is $20.6 million. The Guardian reports Robinson is expected to receive $51 million guaranteed. NBC Sports described the deal as a four-year extension, while The Guardian characterized it as a three-year extension; both agree it runs through 2030.
How the deal came together
NFL Network and ESPN were first to report the extension. Robinson, a fourth-year player, had spent the first week of Falcons training camp — including the first padded practice on Monday — attending sessions but not participating, in what was described as a contract “hold-in” while he pushed for a new deal. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said the relationship between Robinson and the team stayed “very amicable” throughout the negotiation. “I just knew throughout this whole process that it would be a process and I felt good about where we were,” Stefanski told reporters. “I think everybody understands how we feel about Bijan the person and Bijan the player.” Robinson reacted to the news on Instagram, writing “God this is for you! Blessings. Love this team and this city!” His agent, Nicole Lynn of Klutch Sports, posted “Anyone have a brinks truck?” on X.
Return to practice and availability
Robinson rejoined Falcons practice on Tuesday after the deal was finalized, ending any uncertainty about his status for the season. Because he had not been practicing during the hold-in, Stefanski said the team will need to ease him back in rather than have him go full speed immediately. “He’s eager — beyond eager — to get out there,” Stefanski said, adding the team would have a plan over the coming week to ramp him back up. With more than a month remaining before Week 1, Stefanski does not view the adjustment period as a significant concern.
Production that drove the price tag
Robinson, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 draft, led the entire NFL last season with 2,298 yards from scrimmage and scored 11 touchdowns. He finished fourth in the league with 1,478 rushing yards and added 79 receptions for 820 receiving yards. According to The Guardian, Steven Jackson in 2006 is the only other player in NFL history to record at least 1,400 rushing yards and 800 receiving yards in the same season. Robinson is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and has anchored Atlanta’s ground game since entering the league.
