Gilbert’s municipal water system is implementing measures to address water quality challenges outlined in its latest report. The city’s drinking water continues to meet all state and federal standards, though two municipal wells remain offline following the detection of PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” during federal monitoring efforts.
The local water quality concerns occur against a broader regional backdrop. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is preparing to release its first comprehensive plan for managing the Colorado River, which has faced declining water levels and allocation disputes among the seven western states that depend on it. This plan comes after more than three years of negotiations among the basin states and represents a federal response to ongoing standoffs between states over water allocation.
The report also highlights challenges related to Gilbert’s aging water infrastructure and uncertainty surrounding Colorado River water availability, indicating that the city faces multiple interconnected water management issues as it plans for future needs.
