Root returns for second captaincy stint

Joe Root has returned as England’s Test captain for a second reign, following Ben Stokes’ international retirement earlier this summer. Root, 35, previously captained England in 65 Tests from 2017 to 2022, during which he won 27 Tests but also suffered 27 defeats. England’s Test team has endured significant turmoil: Brendon McCullum was sacked as coach after winning only 2 of the team’s last 10 Tests, and Stokes announced his shock retirement after breaking a team curfew ahead of the New Zealand tour.

Off-field issues and recent struggles

England’s recent summer has been dominated by discipline and conduct concerns. The team suffered a 4-1 series defeat by Australia last winter after a drinking incident during a mid-Ashes trip to Noosa. Earlier issues included an incident involving batter Harry Brook and a nightclub bouncer in Wellington. A 2-1 series loss to New Zealand followed, culminating in Stokes’ retirement and McCullum’s exit. According to BBC Sport, Root told the media he hoped his players would be “really good role models and human beings” and represent the country “in the best possible light,” acknowledging the team “might have fallen short on a few occasions in the recent past.”

Coaching and tactical direction

Marcus Trescothick, the batting coach, will take interim charge of the Test side for the three-match series against Pakistan. Stephen Fleming, a fellow New Zealander, has been appointed to replace McCullum as head coach but will not take the role immediately. Root said one of his “big challenges” is “trying not to be Ben Stokes,” emphasizing that Stokes has “unbelievable qualities that I don’t think are easy to replicate.” Root indicated he will maintain the attacking philosophy known as “Bazball” that developed under Stokes and McCullum. He stated the team has “a lot of good stuff that has happened in the past four years,” and that the goal is “not ripping it up, just fine tuning and evolving that and taking that to the next level.”

England squad for Pakistan series

Root said he hopes his “natural persona” will bring calm to the squad. England is expected to pick Surrey all-rounder Dan Lawrence at number six to fill the void left by Stokes, with Lawrence also providing a spin-bowling option. Root had not named a full XI as of Tuesday, with selection decisions still pending for fast-bowling roles.
