A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the southern Mexican Pacific coast on Friday, according to reports from the US Tsunami Warning Center and international news outlets. The earthquake’s epicenter was located off the Mexican coast near Guatemala, prompting evacuations in neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador.
The US Tsunami Warning System initially issued an alert in response to the earthquake but later lifted it. According to the BBC, the warning center recorded tsunami waves measuring 0.3 meters (1.1 feet) high in Puerto Madero and Chiapas in Mexico. France24 reported that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.
