A man in his 30s was fatally shot and his 17-year-old daughter was wounded early Thursday morning inside a home in Buckeye’s Sienna Hills neighborhood, near Verrado Way and McDowell Road. Police detained a suspect, a man in his early 20s who also lived at the home, at the scene without incident, and investigators say the shooting appears to have followed a fight inside the house.
What happened at the scene?
Buckeye police were called just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 27 to reports of shots fired at a home in Sienna Hills. Officers arrived to find a 17-year-old girl with a gunshot wound and, inside the home, her father, a man in his 30s, dead from gunshot wounds. The teen was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, and police say she is expected to survive.
How was the suspect caught?
According to Buckeye police spokesperson Carissa Planalp, an off-duty sergeant who had just finished her shift was driving home in full uniform and marked vehicle when she heard the call go out. Realizing she was close by, she drove to the scene and found a large group of people pointing to one man, shouting that he was the shooter. The sergeant gave him commands, and he complied, allowing her to detain him without incident until backup arrived. Police recovered a weapon at the scene. The suspect, a man in his early 20s who also lives in the home, was still being questioned as of the police briefing to determine his role in the shooting.
What led to the shooting?
Investigators believe the shooting broke out during a fight inside the house. Planalp described the home as housing “a large, blended family” with many people living there. Police have not said whether the suspect is related to the father and daughter who were shot, though they confirmed he lives at the same address.
