A catastrophic flash flood triggered by a collapsed glacier tore through the Nepal-Tibet border region on Wednesday, killing more than 350 people and leaving well over 1,000 missing, many of them foreign tourists and pilgrims. Rescue teams are racing against further danger, since a lake formed by river blockage at the disaster site was rising and at risk of bursting, prompting warnings for residents and rescuers to stay away from riverbanks.
What actually caused the flood?
Scientists initially blamed a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, but the US Geological Survey later revised its analysis: seismic stations, long-period waves and satellite imagery showed no earthquake had occurred. Instead, a section of glacier near the Langtang Lirung peak collapsed, sending an ice-and-rock avalanche into the Lende Khola river, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi. The impact registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event. The debris dammed the river; when the blockage gave way, a surge of water, mud and boulders roared downstream. The Trishuli River reportedly rose by up to 27-30 feet in just half an hour. Glaciologists including Simon Cook (University of Dundee) and Mike Searle (Oxford University) say the exact trigger for the collapse is still unclear, but point to warming permafrost, accelerating Himalayan glacier melt, and the region’s steep, tectonically rising terrain as contributing factors.
How many people are dead or missing, and who are they?
Death tolls climbed through the day Thursday, from initial reports of around 177-180 to over 350-360 confirmed dead, with Nepal police and Chinese state media reporting separately from each side of the border. Missing figures ranged from roughly 826 in Nepal alone up to nearly 1,400 across both countries as counts were updated. Foreign nationals made up a large share of the missing: about 177 Indians, 90 Americans, 63-90 more depending on the count, 34-35 Australians, 33 Britons and 25 Canadians, plus around 260 foreign nationals missing on the Tibet side out of 558 total there. Many were tourists and pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash, a site sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of Tibetan Bon religion, traveling with operators including Kailash Journeys, the Trekkers’ Society, Alpine Eco Trek and Himalayan Glacier Adventures. Unicef said at least 17,000 children were affected, with at least 14 confirmed dead.
What is happening on the ground?
The Nepali army rescued more than 100 people by helicopter, and dozens of injured were flown to Kathmandu for treatment. Rescuers face “extremely challenging” terrain, damaged roads, and the destruction of dozens of bridges and roughly 25 miles of roads, plus lost power and mobile networks in places like Sole village in Nuwakot district. Bodies have been found far downstream in Nepal’s Chitwan district and other southern areas including Gorkha, Tanahun and the Nawalparasi districts. Survivors described the flood as sudden and overwhelming: Rasuwa resident Girilal Budhathoki said the water swept away his wife and four children while he was away from home, and hydropower worker Kamal Kharel said the ground shook “as if there had been a huge earthquake.” Nepal’s disaster management official Bishal Nath Upreti called it a “tsunami from the sky” and one of the country’s largest disasters since the 2015 earthquake.
How is the world responding?
The UK pledged an initial £5m and offered to send emergency responders, with Prime Minister-referenced official Andy Burnham calling it a “very distressing and devastating situation.” The US State Department said around 90 Americans were unaccounted for, with no confirmed US deaths and three rescued, and pledged $500,000 in aid via Catholic Relief Services. Australia said it was deploying a crisis response team and additional Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade staff, with ministers Penny Wong and Matt Thistlethwaite coordinating with tour operators. China’s foreign ministry said nearly 100 Chinese nationals were missing and that it was coordinating with Nepal on search efforts. The UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, called the disaster “horrifying” and allocated an initial $2m in emergency funds.
