The technology, built by a company called NoTraffic, adjusts signal timing in real time based on detected traffic rather than following a fixed schedule set by an engineer.
How does the AI system actually work?
The sensors detect cars, bicycles and pedestrians, count vehicles, spot traffic trends, and flag congestion or crashes to the city. One feature extends a green light by a few seconds if the system judges an approaching driver isn’t going to stop in time, letting them cross legally instead of running a red light. Ramos acknowledged this could be seen as rewarding risky driving, but said protecting law-abiding drivers and reducing crashes justifies the tradeoff. The system can also work in reverse, holding all other directions on red when it detects a driver who appears likely to run a light.
What results has the technology shown so far?
Phoenix has around 1,300 traffic signals citywide but only six engineers to manage timing, which Ramos said is why the city is leaning on automation. The city has tested AI traffic signals since 2020, starting with a Maricopa Association of Governments pilot on Glendale Avenue between Central Avenue and State Route 51, and now has roughly 50 to 60 AI-equipped intersections. A University of Arizona study recently used the technology at about 30 more intersections to study yellow-light timing. NoTraffic’s own case study, published last year, claims a 29% cut in afternoon commute times, a 70% drop in red-light running, a 17% reduction in pedestrian wait times, and carbon dioxide savings equivalent to removing about 200 cars from the road annually. Ramos said the city doesn’t rely solely on those vendor-supplied numbers, noting it works with all three state universities to independently vet the technology. Fewer than 1% of U.S. traffic signals nationally can adapt to real-time conditions this way, according to the Federal Highway Administration, most still running on preset schedules.
