President Trump paid tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) at a funeral service held Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral. Graham, who died on July 11 from an aortic dissection, was remembered by Trump as “a giant of the United States Senate” and honored for his work and friendship. The service drew prominent attendees including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Tuesday’s events included two separate memorial services for Graham. A Capitol Hill service earlier in the day featured remarks from Vice President Vance and bipartisan Senate leadership, including Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). Vice President Vance highlighted Graham’s fiery 2018 defense of then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing.
In remarks before the funeral, Trump described Graham as someone who was “very strong on the military,” noting he “liked war” and “never seen a war he didn’t like,” characterizing Graham as a significant figure focused on military and defense matters. Trump also recalled their past political rivalry when they both ran in the 2016 presidential election, alongside their subsequent working relationship.
