The United States and Iran have both paused military strikes for a second consecutive day, according to reports Sunday, as the two countries pursue negotiations toward an interim ceasefire. The pause comes after nearly two weeks of continuous attacks on Iranian infrastructure by the U.S. military.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz characterized the pause as “giving diplomacy some space,” while noting that military assets are being repositioned in the region. Meanwhile, Republican Senator John Kennedy expressed support for President Trump’s strategy in Iran, stating that the U.S. should “stay the course” and continue applying pressure through an economic blockade. Kennedy told CBS News that he believes “sometimes you have to kill a few chickens to scare the monkeys” and advocated for continuing the blockade to “starve them out.”
Kennedy also called for the Trump administration to share more information about the conflict with the American public. The statements from Trump administration officials and congressional Republicans suggest that the military pause is tactical in nature, designed to create space for diplomatic negotiations rather than representing a fundamental shift in policy toward Iran.
