The United States military and Saudi Arabia carried out coordinated strikes on militia groups in Iraq on Wednesday. Reports indicate that the US military also intercepted an Iranian missile barrage directed at US forces. The strikes resulted in at least 20 deaths among members of militia groups, though casualty figures vary by source. Oil prices increased following the escalation of military activity in the region.
Additional reports mention claimed Iranian attacks on three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz around the same timeframe. Meanwhile, Iraqi armed groups condemned the strikes as a “dangerous escalation,” while Saudi Arabia stated that the operations were conducted in coordination with the US military.
