The United States has paused air strikes against Iran for the first time in two weeks, according to reports from July 26, 2026. US media outlets report that Washington’s concerns over dwindling stockpiles of Patriot interceptors and other air defense munitions may be contributing to the pause. Iran and other sources have confirmed the absence of overnight strikes, marking a notable shift after nearly two weeks of nightly bombardments.
While direct US-Iran military operations have paused, broader regional tensions continue to escalate. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for missile attacks on Saudi oil facilities along the Red Sea and the southern Saudi city of Jizan. The Houthis have vowed retaliation against Saudi Arabia for attacks carried out this week. Saudi air defenses intercepted the ballistic missiles, though reports vary on the extent of damage to Saudi facilities.
The conflict has also spread to new geographic areas. The US military released footage of forces boarding and disabling a tanker accused of breaking the Iran blockade. Additionally, Iran reported a deadly attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, with Tehran accusing Ukraine of responsibility. Iran stated that at least one sailor was killed and another wounded in the incident, and summoned Ukrainian diplomats to protest the attack.
Both the US and Iran have confirmed that diplomatic talks continue amid the military operations. The broader regional conflict, sometimes referred to as “Phase II” of the war on Iran, now involves multiple countries and fronts across the Middle East, Red Sea, and Caspian Sea regions.
