The New York Yankees erased a two-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The win snapped Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak and spoiled the Yankees debut of Braves starter Tyler Mahle.
How the comeback happened
Atlanta led 2-0 after home runs from Austin Riley and Matt Olson. In the ninth, a Braves fielding mistake turned a routine infield hit by Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. into a triple. Austin Wells followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit, and Ben Rice then delivered a game-tying hit off the right-field wall to send the game to extra innings at 2-2.
The extra-inning finish
In the top of the 10th, recent Yankees trade deadline acquisition Luis Garcia Jr. made an over-the-shoulder catch to take away a potential extra-base hit from Ronald Acuna Jr. In the bottom half, with a runner placed at second to start the inning under MLB’s extra-innings rule, New York advanced the runner and third baseman Ryan McMahon delivered the winning sacrifice fly, plating the walk-off run for a 3-2 final. Catcher Austin Wells doused McMahon with water in celebration after the play.
Standings context
The result carried extra weight because of the tight American League East race. Entering Friday, the Yankees and Boston Red Sox were separated by just half a game in the standings. Earlier Friday, the Red Sox blew out the Athletics 13-1, which had briefly moved Boston into second place in the division behind the Tampa Bay Rays. New York’s extra-innings win later that night moved the Yankees back into second place. According to Sporting News, the Red Sox have gone 32-5 over their last 37 games, a stretch during which the Yankees have slumped, at one point falling from first place in the division to being threatened with dropping further down the standings. Both teams were scheduled to play again on Saturday.
