President Volodymyr Zelenskyy removed defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Thursday, sparking protests in Ukraine that continued into Friday. According to reports, the dismissal stemmed from a breakdown in relations between Fedorov’s ministry and the country’s top military leadership, with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi at the centre of the conflict. Zelenskyy defended the decision at a press conference, saying he had to choose between the two sides after relations deteriorated.
Fedorov had gained prominence for his innovative, technology-driven approach to defence, particularly in pioneering Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities. Soldiers and military personnel have publicly criticised his removal, and thousands of civilians protested in Kyiv for multiple days against the decision. Some observers, including anti-corruption advocates, characterised the move as reflecting a deeper struggle over the direction of wartime governance, rather than a routine personnel change.
