A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Sicaya in Peru’s Andes region, resulting in at least five deaths and causing significant damage to residential areas. Adobe buildings collapsed across the affected region, leaving hundreds of people displaced from their homes.
According to reports, the earthquake also left at least 20 people injured. Officials are continuing search and rescue efforts to locate residents who may still be missing following the earthquake.
The extent of damage assessments and the total number of displaced residents are still being determined as authorities respond to the disaster in the mountainous region.
