New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said city attorneys are exploring whether the NYPD could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his expected visit to the United Nations General Assembly in September, citing an International Criminal Court warrant. Netanyahu’s office responded by accusing Mamdani of making the statement to distract from damage caused by his city policies.
The statement drew significant criticism from political figures across the spectrum. Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) called Mamdani a “clown” and argued that the United States is not part of the ICC, suggesting the threat was performative. Other critics dismissed the possibility as “pure political theater” and questioned the legal feasibility of such an arrest.
The controversy highlighted disagreement over the ICC warrant for Netanyahu and the appropriate response by U.S. officials. While some view the warrant as legitimate grounds for legal action, others argue that the U.S. position on the ICC and federal authority over international matters make such an arrest unrealistic and inappropriate for local officials to pursue.
