The Food and Drug Administration is continuing its investigation into a cyclosporiasis outbreak that has affected at least five states and caused over 1,600 reported cases. Despite a false positive test result, the FDA remains focused on shredded lettuce as the likely source of the infection, according to multiple reports. Taylor Farms, one of the nation’s largest produce suppliers, continues to be under investigation as part of the probe.
The investigation has faced complications, including the false positive test result that created confusion about the source. However, federal regulators have maintained their focus on shredded lettuce as the primary concern, issuing warnings and recalls related to the produce despite the testing confusion.
The outbreak has drawn political attention, with Senator Jon Ossoff criticizing Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for terminating the CDC’s FoodNet system, which had been tracking parasitic infections including cyclospora. The decision to end this tracking program was made last year and suspended monitoring managed jointly by the CDC, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the FDA.
