UNESCO has announced the addition of two significant sites to its World Heritage List: Mount Olympus in Greece and the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, France. Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain and the legendary home of the ancient Greek gods, was added to the list after a 12-year period of consideration.
The D-Day landing beaches stretch approximately 80 kilometres along the coastline of northwest France. The sites were selected as locations of major historical significance, with the Normandy beaches serving as the site where Allied forces landed in June 1944, a pivotal moment in World War II against Nazi Germany and its fascist allies in Europe.
The UNESCO World Heritage List recognizes sites of outstanding cultural, historical, or natural importance to humanity. The two designations represent recognition of different forms of historical significance, spanning ancient mythology and mythology and twentieth-century military history.
